Low Carb Foods – What Fits In Your Low Carb Diet?

June 24th, 2007

A person starting a low carbohydrate diet needs to know which types of food he or she should consume and which ones to shun. Getting a list of low carb foods sometimes fools people into thinking that the diet is a hard thing to do. Instead of thinking “What can’t I eat?” you would be better off with a mindset that asks “What CAN I eat?” You will then discover that natural, low carb foods are in abundance everywhere! And you might just discover that you’re not missing the food that you were regretting giving up a short time ago.

Once you start your low carb diet, you will be pleased to discover the many things that you can keep on (and add to!) your shopping list. As a general rule, most high protein foods are allowable on your diet. So push your grocery cart to the meat section and feel free to plan meals that feature pork, beef, lamb, venison, and veal dishes. But be careful when it comes to processed meat; many of them are cured with chemicals or sugar, which can pack on the carbs.

Mosey along over to the poultry section and think about recipes for chicken, turkey, duck, and pheasant. These are rich in protein and other nutrients (but not carbs) and can be cooked and served in many attractive and great-tasting ways. Want to take advantage of the bounties of the ocean and lakes? Choose from among fish and other seafood, which are also high in protein and fatty acids that are good for your heart.

Feel like serving a salad as a side dish? You’ll be pleased to know that most salad vegetables are allowed on low carb diets. And this is a good thing because you should be getting your carbohydrate quota from vegetables, not from junk food, not from starchy goodies. Although the intake of a number of fruits should be kept to a minimum, fruits like berries can be enjoyed without guilt. What about snack food? Snacks exist in a reduced-carbohydrate diet, too, but not the processed kind. Go au naturel – nuts are perfect for something to munch on in between meals. They’re high in protein and contain the much-praised good oils and fats.

But what if you’re the type of person who’s all thumbs in the kitchen and can’t even scramble some eggs? You’ll be glad to know that there exist a wide variety of low carb convenience foods that will make your dieting life much easier. You can choose from juices, shakes, protein bars, morning cereals, pancakes and pancake syrup, baking mixes, cookie mixes, low carb bread and related products, even low carb chocolate cake and cheesecake!

Dairy products are encouraged in low carb diets. Most cheeses can be enjoyed either by themselves as a snack or as an ingredient in dishes. But keep in mind that cheese contains carbohydrates, so you should limit your portions. Eggs are perhaps one of the main staples of the controlled-carb dieter; they are high in protein, have no carbs, and are very versatile. Plus, they’re inexpensive, too! Drinking milk is also a good idea; it’s a good source of calcium. But if you are lactose-intolerant, it would be a good idea to drink milk in small quantities periodically until you find that you no longer have any adverse reactions to it.

Eating out also used to be a problem for low carb dieters. Restaurant staff didn’t have a clue about the carb content of food. Today however, many dining establishments have taken measures to accommodate carb-counting consumers. A number of them even list what type of low carb foods they offer and the nutritional information of each dish. Do you want a hamburger without the buns? A salad with low carb dressing? All of these and more are possible today.

As you have perhaps realized, finding low carb foods is not at all that hard, especially the natural ones. In fact, it’s entirely likely that you have been consuming these foods all your life without realizing that they are suitable for weight loss or weight maintenance. And if you concentrate on these foods, you’ll probably find that you won’t have time anymore to bemoan and worry about carbohydrate-rich foods that you have had to give up.

6 Great Ways to Enjoy Your Low Carb Diet

May 23rd, 2007

If there is one low carb diet complaint that we hear over and over again, it’s that a low carb diet is so boring. Sure, they don’t always use those words, but that’s what they mean when they say “there’s not enough variety,” or “it gets so monotonous,” or “there’s nothing to eat.” Luckily for you, these carb complainers are wrong. No one ever said that low carb dieting had to be boring. In fact, low carb dieting is not about restriction, but about enjoying really delicious, really diverse foods.

There are many ways to begin enjoying your low carb diet today! Here are 6 simple ways you can turn your low carb diet into a high taste adventure!

1.Mix It Up

Start thinking outside the “I can’t eat anything” box and start seeing all the things you can eat on a low carb diet. You’d be surprised how many foods open up before your eyes when you stop focusing on what you can’t eat and being looking around at what you can.

2.Get Spicy

If you do nothing else to break your low carb blahs than fill your cupboards with assorted spices and seasonings, you’ll still be thankful. Dress up your low carb foods with fresh herbs and tangy marinades. Add zip and zest with flavorful dressings and mouth-watering marinades. Jazz up your menu with lip-smacking low carb syrups and spicy sauces. The key is taking the bland and making it bold!

3.Go Meatless

Dump the notion that you have to eat meat every day and try a vegetarian dish a few days a week. Believe it or not, you don’t have to be a vegetarian to eat like one. In fact, studies have shown that vegetarians who follow a well-balanced low-carb, low-fat, high-fiber diet often have a lower chance of coronary artery disease, hypertension, and obesity. If that’s not enough convincing, try any of the many meat substitutes in your local store. Whether you’re looking for fish, chicken, steak, or sausages, you’ll find that the meatless version of each often has the same consistency and taste as the original. The beauty of it, of course, is these meat-free dishes are often dramatically lower in fat and calories than the meats they replace. In most cases, the protein count is higher, and the net carbs are very low too!

4.Make It Green and Leafy

Make boring a thing of the past as you fill your repast with green leafy salads topped with all kinds of low carb treats! Turn your side salad into the main dish by adding any of the following in real or veggie versions: chicken, crab meat, shrimp, tuna, or turkey. Color your garden delights with any kind of cheese and top with the perfect crunch of non-starchy vegetables, including alfalfa sprouts, chives, mushrooms, radishes, and snow peas.

5.Have a Snack Attack

When the idea of having a steak for dinner just isn’t enough to get you through the afternoon, it’s time you had a snack attack. Fill up on low carb snacks to give your tummy something to smile about. For something nutty, try small portions of macadamia nuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds, or walnuts. For something cheesy, there’s nothing more fun than playing with (and eating) string cheese. Or, for the ultimate treat, make a super smoothie. Make a smoothie by mixing your favorite low carb protein powder in water, or soy milk with your favorite berries and a pinch of Splenda.

6.Low Carb Doesn’t Mean No Carb

When nothing else is helping you get over your low carb blues, remember this: Low carb doesn’t mean no carb. Your job is to rid your diet of refined and processed carbohydrates and replace them with the good stuff: whole grains, vegetables, nuts, and fruits high in nutrients and fiber. When you realize that you don’t have to go carb-free to let go of the pounds, you’ll stop waiting and begin enjoying all the foods that are available to you on your low carb diet!

Low Carb Breads Make Meal Time Easier

August 24th, 2006

Just a couple of years ago, the choices for packaged foods were limited but today a trip through your grocery store will yield many low carb versions of your favorite foods. The ones with the most impact and which have made my daily meal prep easier are low carb breads.

One of my favorite breads is a whole wheat wrap that has only 5 grams net carbs and is perfect for any kind of sandwich. Remember when you used to have to use a lettuce leaf to hold your tuna or turkey? Well not anymore with this wonderful and tasty wrap!

This wrap not only makes great sandwiches, but you can use it for many other things as well. Remember when your family would send out for pizza and you would sit with them staring longingly at the pie – well not anymore! Now you can simply scrape off the pizza cheese, sauce and toppings and stick it in the wrap! How about subs like those delicious steak and cheese just order them at the sub shop on a wrap and then transfer the fillings of the sub into your low carb wrap (or better yet, maybe you can get the sub guy to just put the filling inside your wrap?).

And didn’t you long to soak up those egg yolks at breakfast in a nice whole wheat bread. Well, thats easy with Arnold Carb Counting bread. I favor the whole wheat which has only 6 grams of carbs per slice. You can buy this bread already made in most grocery stores which is much easier than baking from a mix and you might even be able to use it during the induction phase!

Now that low carb bread is readily available its much easier to prepare meals. If you are busy like me, having the time to bake bread is few and far between, but now I can just simply make a trip to the grocery store and have my fill of sandwiches. You can even use the bread to make some of those favorite dishes you may be missing like french toast, stuffing, croutons for salads and bread pudding.
